GANDHINAGAR: Amit Shah, the newly-appointed national president of the BJP, said on Friday that the Modi government at the Centre will take the country to new heights of development. "A new era — the era of BJP and Narendra Modi — has begun in the country. It will take the country to new heights of development," he said.

Shah was speaking at a felicitation ceremony held at Ahmedabad airport on his arrival from Delhi on Friday evening. This was his first speech in the country after becoming the BJP's national president.

"Narendrabhai's government is doing extremely well at the Centre and the budget is the best example of this. However, our responsibilities as party workers have increased manifold. Our role should be to reach out to every home in the country and be the strong link between the government and the people,'' Shah said.

Enumerating his priorities as the new party president, Shah said that BJP is strong in East and South India. "However, our priority is to strengthen the party further in this region in the coming decade. From Panchayat to Parliament, we have to have BJP rule," said Shah.

He said that he had started his political career as a booth worker in Ahmedabad but he had now become national president of the party. "This can happen only in the BJP," he said. Shah promised that he would do his best to justify the trust his party had reposed in him. Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, all ministers of her cabinet, state BJP president RC Faldu and all top BJP leaders of the state were present at the facilitation ceremony. In her speech on the occasion, Anandiben Patel said that she was older to 'Amitbhai'. "Hence, I will not only congratulate him but also give him my blessings that he be successful in his new role. He and Narendrabhai will generate extraordinary results for the party in the coming days at the national level,'' the chief minister said.

Shah's son is getting engaged for marriage on Sunday in Ahmedabad.
