KUWAIT, July 11 (KUNA) -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees welcomed on Friday the generous contribution of USD 3 million from the State of Kuwait in support of UNHCR's aid operations in Iraq. The donation comes as part of a larger contribution of USD 10 million from Kuwait to several humanitarian organizations, responding to deteriorating humanitarian conditions and rising internal displacement in Iraq, the UNHCR office in Kuwait said in a press statement.
About USD 9.5 million of the contribution was channeled through the UN agencies as well as the International Organization for Migration, while USD 500,000 was channeled through the Kuwait Red Crescent and the International Islamic Charity Organization, it added.
"We deeply appreciate the State of Kuwait's continuous support to UNHCR. This latest contribution to our operations in Iraq, which comes during the holy month of Ramadan, will surely assist UNHCR in providing urgent and much needed humanitarian relief to the displaced inside the country", said The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres.
The latest violence in Iraq has affected the lives of some 1.5 million people who are in dire need for assistance and basic humanitarian relief, covering shelter, food, water, clothing, and health care. (end) hrz.msa
