Vibha Ramaswami started KathaKonnect Dance Academy three years ago as her tribute to the Kathak dance and to help people “connect with the form”.

To celebrate its third anniversary, Vibha is organising “Connecting with Kathak - 2014” on July 13 at J.S.S. Auditorium, Jayanagar at 6 p.m. The event will feature a Kathak performance by the students of the academy, which will be followed by Sohini Debnath from Kolkata.

Sohini Debnath, who is in the city, says she started dancing when she was three-years-old! She later went on to train herself under Rani Karnaa. “Ever since I have been so passionate about dance that I can not think of a life besides being a performer.” Though she does not enjoy teaching, she says that sometimes she “is forced to take on more teaching assignments just to sustain myself.” Though Sohini has learnt Odissi, she was “drawn” toward Kathak and says she will come to Bangalore as long as people like what she presents. “Here people are showing interest in this form though the place is dominated with Bharatanatya. There is a lot of potential here. But, people like Maya didi and Nirupama Rajendra have done amazing work in this field.”

About her performance, Sohini says “it will be different.

It will not be a traditional solo performance. But one with a twist. I will present compositions from various backgrounds. Like one classical piece, a contemporary dance item, based on Kathak but modern music, and one choreography performed to a ghazal.” Entry passes for the performance will be available at www.Connectingwith
