Clippers introduce Spencer Hawes, Jordan Farmar

It was easy for Clippers Coach Doc Rivers to target free agents Spencer Hawes and Jordan Farmar for his team.

Rivers, who is also the president of basketball operations for the team, knew that the 7-foot-1 Hawes has the size and shooting ability to back up power forward Blake Griffin and center DeAndre Jordan.

Rivers saw Farmar as a capable replacement for Darren Collison, who signed a three-year, $16-million contract with the Sacramento Kings.

Both Hawes, who signed a four-year, $23-million deal with the Clippers, and Farmar, who signed a two-year, $4.2 million deal with them, were introduced Thursday at the team’s training facility.

“I thought they were a good fit for the way we play,” Rivers said. “We needed more size and we needed more skill. With Spencer, he was our target.”

Farmar played last season for the Lakers, but he said Rivers made the first call and that was all he needed to join the Clippers.

“The potential for great things to happen within this organization is what really helped me make that decision easy,” Farmar said.

Hawes had Portland and Phoenix after him.

But Hawes said one conversation with Rivers convinced him to join the Clippers.

“I think with Doc and speaking with him, when he tells you something, you buy in,” Hawes said. “You believe it right away. I think his sell from the beginning was strong and it definitely left an impression.”
