Birthdays and beers for 'Veep' star Anna Chlumsky

Anna Chlumsky attends the 2014 CFDA fashion awards at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center on June 2, 2014 in New York City.

This time last year, Anna Chlumsky had just given birth to her daughter, Penelope.

Now, the day after the Emmy nominations, her child turns 1. And Chlumsky, up for supporting comedy actress for HBO's Veep, is a bit emotional.

"Oh my God, her birthday is tomorrow and I can't believe it. I was just watching her in her adorable cuteness crawling across the floor and thinking, 'It's wondrous,' " she says.

And helps keep everything in perspective. "That was part of what was so wonderful. Having her around – it keeps things in perspective. I'm so, so thrilled with this nomination. I'm so proud of everybody. And on top of it – yeah, having a baby made it so much richer," she says.

Given the universal accolades, personal and professional, heaped on her fellow nominee, multiple Emmy winner and co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, we have to ask: Is there anything the Veep lead cannot handle?

"I don't think so. If there is, she doesn't let anyone know. I can't think of anything. I don't think she's ever driven a train, but I'm sure she could if someone explained it to her. I can discuss babies with her. It makes you go, 'You're a real human being and you're this fantastic and genuine.' She is someone you aspire to be like," says Chlumsky.

As for her, she and her husband aren't planning a crazy night out. "I'm currently in Williamstown doing the Williamstown Theater Festival. We're in this beautiful artistic bubble right now. We have some cider doughnuts we bought at an apple farm. She'll get a little taste of that for her birthday. I think mommy and daddy deserve a beer," says Chlumsky.
