I’m losing out on 70% of my work because Vishnuji is no more: Suhasini Mani Ratnam
Actress Suhasini Mani Ratnam considers the Kannada film industry as much her own as she does the Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam industries. “My next, Sachin... Tendulkar Alla, will remind people of my first 5-6 films. This is one of the best roles I’ve essayed lately. While the film is based more on Venkatesh Prasad and the boy Snehith, it has a wonderful role for an actress over 40,” she says.
Suhasini adds that she worked on her look since she plays sister to 11-year-old Snehith. “I’ve a 22-year-old son in real life. So I knew I had to look younger to play the role. I requested them not to start shooting until I lost some weight. I lost about 6.5 kgs for this role,” she adds.
And it was her dedication and acting that had co-actor Venkatesh smitten. “Initially, Anil Kumble was to do his role. Later, Javagal Srinath was almost signed on for the role. But when he heard the story, he said that it was too complex and was also apprehensive to star alongside me. He suggested Venkatesh’s name. Incidentally, what worked against Srinath, worked for Venkatesh. He took up the film because he got to act in a challenging role with me,” she says.
The veteran actress adds that she’s not that frequent on Sandalwood screen because she misses her late co-star Vishnuvardhan. “I’m losing out on 70% of my work because Vishnuji is no more. He and I would do a film together nearly every year. Be it Mathad Mathadu Mallige or School Master. In fact, I was to co-star in Vijaylakshmi Singh’s Ee Bandhana too, but I suggested Jayaprada’s name since Vishnuji and I had done Bandhana together already,” signs off Suhasini.
