One of the revelations of the second season is Samira Wiley, who plays Poussey. She has a prominent arc, as a woman who loses her prison family to Vee and her drug-dealing business. Wiley (left, with Danielle Brooks) brought just the right amount of bravado and stubbornness to the story line, with Poussey refusing to succumb to Vee despite Taystee’s insistence. Not even her love for Taystee could shake her beliefs and her instincts. I didn’t quite notice Wiley’s beauty until this season; her eyes are so open, deep, and expressive.

And while I’m at it, here’s a shoutout to Natasha Lyonne (above, with Matt Peters), the lady with the crooked smile and the massive mane of hair who plays Nicky Nichols. She brings a beautifully modulated sense of humor to the show, dropping a few wry lines in each episode like Litchfield’s own Groucho Marx. She’s a brainy, profane standup comedian. But she can be moving, too, as she offers sweet consolation to Lorna. I heard Lyonne on “WTF With Marc Maron,” by the way, and I was blown away by her drollness, her frankness, and her dramatic history of drug abuse. It’s worth finding online.
