New expresses to Gowda, BSY homes

Mysore and Bangalore were mentioned as cities to figure in an effort to introduce high-speed trains.

The big-ticket announcement for Railway Minister D V Sadananda Gowda’s home state of Karnataka is three new express trains, besides a new Premium Express from Kamakhya to Bangalore. The new expresses include two within the state, one of these a daily between Bangalore (where Gowda’s Lok Sabha constituency is located) and Mangalore (his home district). The second will operate twice a week between Bangalore and Shimoga (the home constituency of Gowda’s political benefactor B S Yeddyurappa).

The third new express train Gowda announced will be a weekly interstate Tatanagar-Bangalore Express from the newly developed Baiyappanahalli station in eastern Bangalore.

Gowda has also introduced three pairs of electric trains on the 40 km Bangalore-Ramanagaram route six days a week and the 40 km Bangalore-Nelamangala route daily. And a tourist train will touch parts of Karnataka among his plans to introduce tourist and pilgrimage trains in the country.

“One tourist train will run from Gadag to Pandarpur via Bagalkot, Bijapur and Solapur covering the pilgrim and tourist places of Karnataka and Maharashtra. Another such train will start from Rameshwaram covering pilgrim and tourist places like Negaluru [Bangalore], Chennai, Ayodhya, Varanasi and Haridwar,” Gowda said in his budget speech.

Mysore and Bangalore also found mention as cities that will figure in an effort to introduce high-speed trains. Gowda also announced a study to explore the possibility of enhancing the existing railway network to create a suburban railway network for Bangalore. In addition the budget lists a Shimoga-Sringeri-Mangalore line among new surveys, along with a survey for the doubling of the Mangalore-Ullal-Surathkal line.
