The mortal remains of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister, Haseena Parkar, were laid to rest at Bada Qabrastan, close to Chandanwadi, in the early hours of Monday. The city police had expected at least 5,000 people to turn up for the funeral, but just 500 relatives and mourners joined the cortege from Parkar’s house at Gordon Hall in Nagpada.

The Samajwadi Party’s Maharashtra chief and MLA, Abu Asim Azmi, had come to the burial ground for paying his last respects. Parkar (51) had died of a heart attack on Sunday afternoon.

Parkar had been undergoing treatment for heart problems and was taken to Habib Hospital in Dongri after she suffered a heart attack. Dawood and his family have been abroad since over two decades, but the don sent his sister Zaitun to Mumbai for the funeral.

After the religious formalities were completed, the cortege moved from Parkar’s Gordon Hall residence via Mohammed Ali Road and then Crawford Market. The route was cleared by traffic police and local police station personnel.

“We deployed three teams of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF). Apart from these, deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners and senior inspectors were told to be present along the route. At Dongri, we had kept 100 men from J J Marg police station near her residence, while at the funeral venue, nearly 200 men from L T Marg police station were on duty. This was the best possible bandobast we could organise, given the urgency of the situation,” said Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police (South).

An ambulance from the Muslim Ambulance Society was also stationed on Mohammed Ali Road to take the body to the burial ground, but Haseena’s son Ali Shah and relatives decided carry the body all the way.

Teams of policemen recorded the funeral proceedings and attendees on video, but relatives objected to coverage by press photographers and TV teams taking pictures. The cortege reached the burial ground at 2.40 am.

Haseena was buried in the special enclosure for the Dawood family in Bada Kabrastan. The spot, called ‘Dawood bhai ka Otta’, is located at the entrance and is near the mosque. Dawood’s parents Ibrahim Kaskar, a retired Mumbai police head constable, and Amina were buried here.

Police were not allowed inside the burial ground, but a few of them in civil attire managed to enter. Some of them perched on nearby buildings and recorded the funeral on video.

Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Azmi said, “I am a political personality. My former residence is close to where Haseena Parkar stayed. I know almost everyone in Nagpada. In fact, one gets punya by attending a funeral.’’

While Dawood was the third of 12 children, Haseena was the seventh. Married to Ibrahim Ismail Parkar, she had two sons and daughters each. Haseena came into prominence after her husband was killed by Arun Gawli’s gang in 1991. Dawood retaliated by killing Parkar's killers in a shootout at JJ Hospital. It is said she earned much of her wealth by settling construction and property disputes, but Haseena is also said to have received money regularly from Dawood, and looked after his properties in Mumbai.

After losing her son Danish in an accident in 2006, Haseena went into depression. She was also being treated for hypertension and diabetes.
