KANNUR: The bodies of two youths, who were murdered and buried in a remote hill area in Kasaragod, were recovered on Monday. The bodies of Kuttichirtra native Faheem T P and Thalassery native Nafeer were exhumed from the hilly terrains of Maruthadukkam near Kundamkuzhi on Monday afternoon, after the three youths who were arrested in connection with the murder identified the spot.
The persons arrested in connection with the case are Mohammed Mahjeer Sanaf (25), from Cherkala; Mohammed Irshad (24) and Mohammed Safwan (24), from Vidyanagar in Kasargod.
According to police the motive was to loot the gold and money and put the blame on the gold smugglers for whom the murdered duo worked as carriers.
The police version is that Nafeer was a regular gold carrier of the smugglers and in November last year he had brought a huge quantity of gold, which he did not deliver to the smugglers. Later he took a house in Attavara locality in Mangalore and brought Fahim for his help. In their effort to sell the gold, they came in touch with the three youths. However, the smugglers traced Nafeer and called him on his cellphone and threatened to kill him. Incidentally, the trio overheard this threatening call and plotted a plan to get hold of the gold and money.
As per the plan they purchased ten cents of land in Maruthadukkam last month and dug pits there. On the night of July 1, the trio killed Nafeer and Fahim by slitting their throat and concealed the bodies in gunny bags, which were later taken to Maruthadukkam and buried.
However, the neighbours felt something suspicious and informed the police. When the police reached the house they were apparently cleaning the bloodstains on the floor They were taken into custody and when questioned in detail they spilled the beans and confessed to the crime, following which the families of the victims were informed.
Since the smugglers had threatened to kill Nafeer, the trio had thought that even if the murder came to light the blame would fall on the smugglers, said police. However, the police refused to divulge further details and said that the arrested youths had to be questioned in detail again to get the complete conspiracy behind.
After recovering the bodies around 3pm the postmortem was held on the spot where the bodies were found buried and later handed over to the families.
