Look at the man in the picture above. If dictionaries had photos next to certain words, his would be next to ‘ambition’. This is a man that does everything he loves and manages to achieve unbelievable performances, despite having all odds working against him.
It’s really hard to believe that this man is not only one of the best drivers involved in the Blancpain Series but also a two-time gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics and, this weekend, managed to finish the Dolomites Marathon (Maratona dles Dolomites) with a handbike, covering 138 km in nearly 8 hours.

Yes, this is Alessandro Zanardi, a man that lost his legs doing what he lived for, racing. In a freak accident his car crashed and claimed the lower part of his body. However, he didn’t give up on his dreams and kept fighting.

Today, he races a BMW in the Blancpain Series and is BMW’s Brand Ambassador, living out his dream despite everything that life threw at him.

This weekend, 10,000 people line-up for this year’s Marathon and amongst them you could spot one single handbike. It was Alessandro’s. He managed to cover the 138 kilometers of the circuit that goes over 7 passes in Northern Italy in 7 hours and 52 minutes but it doesn’t really matter how long it took him. All that matters is that he managed to finish and won the respect of everyone out there.

‘It was a sensational day. There aren’t many things left to say but I’m happy that I took part in this adventure. To be involved in such an event is a life lesson, an experience that has to be crossed off your bucket list”, said Zanardi after the event.

“It was really hard but everything went according to the plan me and my coach put together before the race. [...] It was the supreme adventure, something nobody else without both managed to pull off in the past,” he added.

We’ll be getting back in touch with our hero on August 23rd and 24th, when he’ll be racing his Z4 GT3 in the Blancpain Sprint Series in Slovakia at “Slovakia Ring”, near Bratislava.
