Golpo Holeo Shotti Movie Review

Critic's Rating: 2.5/5
Summing it up, Golpo Holeo Shotti is not a bad watch if you are a hardcore horror buff.

The beginning is interesting, the build-up, better, but it’s the end where Golpo Holeo Shotti falters. Though the title is justified at the fag end, one kind of gets tired of ghosts ordering pizza.

The worst thing about reviewing a thriller with a twist in its tail is the ethical inability to reveal too much of the storyline. And there lies the catch, as it’s the tail of this film that is flawed. For one, the horror story begins in a house where the pizzas are not supposed to be delivered by Rudra in the first place, but no one seems to notice this. Why are no questions asked? Why is there no justification for this glaring anomaly? Baffling…

Then again, what is a small-time entrepreneur, who owns a decent pizza shop, doing with diamonds worth crores? Oops! Did I just reveal a part of the twist…? Anyway, how can a pizza joint possibly be the target of an income tax raid? Is there another facet of owner Ratul that is mysteriously never mentioned or shown in the film? The mystery deepens…

Yes, I know. Which story doesn’t have flaws? But there is also a thing called rational thinking. I mean, come on! Kolkata residents don’t go to Siliguri to get a passport made and catch international flights, even if they are trying to avoid detection. Adapt a south script, but at least re-write it in a way that doesn’t turn it into something incredulous!

But the film does have its good points. And the music by Indradeep Das Gupta is one of those. The song Ei bhalo ei kharap has some fascinating imagery, thanks to the cinematography by Subhankar Bhar. Even the background score is quite effective in inducing those shocks that a horror sequence calls for.

That reminds me of the horror sequence, which forms the crux of the film. It’s good, really good in its own terrifying way. And Soham’s reactions and body language truly make up for whatever gaps the makeup department leaves vis-à-vis the ghosts (Sayani as Riya, Kaushik Chakraborty as Bobby and Annie Saha as Mrinalini). The sights and sounds do make you shift uncomfortably in your seat and spill popcorn at times. Mimi, too, has lived up to her horror-loving, mischievous avatar. In fact, when it comes to the acting department, flaws are the last things one can think of.

But as mentioned earlier, it’s the twist that’s a comedy of errors. And it doesn’t exactly feel nice when such a beautiful buildup makes way to a sequence that actually promotes crime. Not done, especially when you are warned at the very outset of not committing as petty a crime as smoking a cigarette, because it ‘can’ cause cancer.

Summing it up, Golpo Holeo Shotti is not a bad watch if you are a hardcore horror buff. Go, watch, spill some popcorn… Just remember not to spill too much ketchup on yourself; you could be taken for a ghost!
