Ukai catchment areas record some rain

As the monsoon shows no sign of revival over South Gujarat, the areas of Ukai dam over Tapi river have started receiving moderate rain fall in last one day.

SURAT: As the monsoon shows no sign of revival over South Gujarat, the areas of Ukai dam over Tapi river have started receiving moderate rain fall in last one day.
Major catchment areas of Ukai dam that provides water to Surat city and major parts of Surat and Tapi district like Tiska and Gopla kheda recorded rain after a gap of nearly 20 days. Tiska recorded 15 mm and Gopal kheda 4 mm of rains.

Authorities at Ukai dam continued to release water for irrigation even on July 05 and 7471 Cusecs of water was released for the purpose. The levels at Ukai dam were recorded at 303.13 feet on July 06, 2014. At present one Hydro power plant is being operated and other three are shut .
Mean while Surat city reeled under sweltering heat of 34.2 degree Celsius. With 69 per cent humidity people suffered sweating and didn't have any respite from the heat. South westerly wind blowing over the city with a sped of 12 km per hour drew away the clouds once again leaving the city devoid of any rain.
However Meteorological department has predicted rains in coming few days and said that monsoon will be soon revived . The overall rainfall in the region is likely to a little below the normal average of 50 inches in this region.
