A 19-year-old youth was arrested by the Kandivali police after he barged into a hotelier's residence, along with an associate, to commit a theft and attacked his family in the process. The incident took place at Hindustan Naka in Charkop early on Sunday.
The complainant, Dinesh Jaiswal, and his wife were asleep at home. Around 3 am, the accused, Sunny Jaiswal and Ajju, broke open the door latch and barged into the hotelier's residence.
They scooped up a pair of gold earrings worth Rs 20000 and weighing 10gm besides Rs 22000 in cash. As the duo was about to flee, Dinesh and his wife woke up and raised an alarm. The couple tried to stop the thieves from escaping and put up a fight. One of the accused then hit Dinesh and his wife on their heads.
Meanwhile, neighbours started to gather and Sunny was caught. Ajju managed to flee. Sunny, who is unemployed and does not have a crime record, was taken into custody. He had been thrashed by locals and has been admitted to the Shatabdi Hospital. Dinesh and his wife were also treated for their injuries at the hospital.
A case of robbery has been registered against Sunny and Ajju at the Kandivali police station.
