According to reports, the concrete railing of the staircase collapsed while the birthday party of Rinku Pandey, resident of house number 5 of 62nd block, was in progress at around 9pm.

VARANASI: The poor quality of construction under Kanshiram Awas Yojana in Shivpur area claimed one life and injured more than 10 persons after a major portion of a staircase of the building caved-in during a birthday party on Thursday night. District magistrate Pranjal Yadav has instituted a three-member committee to look into the matter.
According to reports, the concrete railing of the staircase collapsed while the birthday party of Rinku Pandey, resident of house number 5 of 62nd block, was in progress at around 9pm.
People, who were dancing on DJ arranged under the staircase on the ground floor, got trapped under concrete debris. An 11-year old boy, Adiya, Rinku's nephew, died while 12 others were injured in the incident.
The administrative officials and police reached the incident site after getting information and injured persons were rushed to the hospital. The local residents staged dharna and refused to give body for postmortem in protest against the incident. They demanded action against the persons responsible for poor quality of building construction. The agitated people were calmed after the officials assured that stern action will be taken against the erring persons responsible for the incident.
Taking a serious note of the incident, the district magistrate Pranjal Yadav ordered for an enquiry by a three-member team of engineers of PWD, RES and Nirman Nigam. The DM told TOI that the committee would submit its report in 2-3 days and appropriate action would be taken against the guilty.
