A Bumpy Roadtrip

Always, a sequel tries to flatter the original. No doubt you do not want to break the mould of a successful formula. Savaari 2 tries to pay homage to Savaari, the 209 film, and in the bargain warps whatever originality it had managed to come up with. If the first half is a slow journey, the second half has a few quirky plot twists and a comic turn. The film aims for a feel-good end, and you are also glad that it finally ended. The film may do well on television, but on small screen it is a tedious journey.

The 'journey' in this film is forced on the story. Three people travelling in a car takes up half of the screen space, but adds nothing to the actual story. It was done just to justify the title. Though a number of characters tell their tales in flashbacks, the actual story is of two characters played by Kitty and Karnad.

The rest of the characters are just incidental. Kitty has married the daughter of a minister in the hope of settling down in life. But his father-in-law turns out to be a tough nut who wants Kitty to be his own man. A journalist, played by Karnad, has fallen on bad times and needs this minister's help who is vary of helping him out. Karnad takes on board Kitty to convert Veerappan's hidden black money to white. But as the story progresses, Karnad's plans turns out to be more sinister than imagined. Kiran Rao as the police officer who postpones his wedding to go undercover to unravel the mystery and Abbas as a rich doctor who flees his wife also become part of the plot. The Naxals in the original are replaced by Veerappan replicas who have no locus standi in improving the film. Chandru, Sadhu Kokila and Chikkanna are added to bring in the cheers. They manage this with one episode in the first and another in the second. Wonder why retired police officer Sangram Singh agreed to a role that actually makes fun of him.

The first half of the film fails because there is too much of a car travel. The second half would have been better if the effort was towards making it a comedy film.
