Pak ‘spy’ denies compromising national security in court

The accused were arrested from Sector 44 in Chandigarh in July 2010 and chargesheeted.

Alleged Pakistani spy Kashif Ali and other accused in a case under the Foreigner’s Act, Official Secret’s Act and cheating under the Indian Penal Code recorded their statement in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Anubhav Sharma on Wednesday. The case has been adjourned till July 17 for deposition of defence witnesses.

All the accused, which includes Kashif Ali, Gurpinder Singh, Jagdish Kumar, Kulwinder Singh and Anand Kumar, deposed before the court and denied all allegations against them.

The accused were arrested from Sector 44 in Chandigarh in July 2010 and chargesheeted. While Kashif Ali faces charges under sections of the Official Secrets Act and Foreigner’s Act, all five accused have been charged with criminal conspiracy and using fake documents as genuine under the IPC.

As per the FIR lodged in the case, Ali was living in a rented accommodation two and a half years before he was arrested for allegedly passing on information about India’s national security to handlers in Pakistan. Sensitive information pertaining to national security was recovered from Kashif.

A resident of Zulfiqar Colony in Faislabad (Pakistan), he had been monitoring Indian defence installations. Ali lived under the fake identity of Pawan Kumar and claimed he was a resident of Pitampura in Delhi and worked as a property agent.

He revealed his identity on being interrogated. Police recovered from him documents related to the Indian Army and a digital camera. A day later, the police arrested Kulwinder Singh, a resident of Sector 66 in Mohali, Gurpinder Singh, a resident of Sector 47-C and Jagdish Kumar, a resident of Phase IV in Mohali, for providing Kashif with fake documents such as a PAN card, voterID card and passport to help him live in India.
