Abhimanyu Puranik won the 21st edition of the MJ’s Trophy Every Sunday Rapid chess Championship, aggregating a score of six out of six. Puranik, who is a FIDE Candidate Master, had a brilliant outing, hardly putting a piece wrong and cruising towards the title in comfortable fashion.
The win in the 21st edition took Puranik’s tally to six edition victories. Puranik had also won the Rapid Championship held last week and is now preparing to compete in the National Junior Championship in the third week of July. This edition of the Rapid chess championship had 38 players participating with 21 of these players having an international rating. The tournament was played in the usual Swiss League format.
Pratik Mulay won the second place in the 21st edition, logging 4.5 points. Krishnamoorthy Srinath bagged third place with a score of four points. Gaurav Konde narrowly missed out on third place as he too scored four points but Srinath edged ahead with a better Buch score of 24.5. Mohammed Fawaz took fifth place with four points and a Buch score of 22.
The under-8 category was won by Aditya Samant while Yash Watarkar took home the prize for the under-12 category.
Atharava Wairagade won the under-14 title while the under-16 crown was secured by Harshad Hagawane. Aakanksha Hagawane was adjudged as the best women player while Prakash Karmarkar once again took home the prize for the best veteran player.
The 22nd edition of the tournament will be played on July 20 at the Mangalwadi commercial complex in Patrakar Nagar.
