‘Great job by traffic cops’

‘Great job by traffic cops’
Bangalore Mirror’s story on Wednesday about the police raid to check rogue auto drivers gets vocal support from readers. #TheAutoRaid
The auto raid will improve Bangalore’s image.
The Bangalore Traffic Police’s drive against errant auto drivers will only improve the image of Bangalore. It will ensure the safety and security of all, particularly women, children and senior citizens. Abhay
Excellent job by the Bangalore Traffic Police. Next time, please try to improve their driving. Each auto may have dented at least 10 cars. Rohit
Great job done by traffic police. Lots of thanks from a senior citizen of Bangalore. Vijay Kumar Bagla
It is an excellent effort to rein in rogue auto drivers. The rapid influx of visitors pouring into the city daily has changed the attitudes of auto men. Most of them have turned rich overnight and the gadgets they flaunt is the proof. Such regular raids would certainly help passengers. KVijayan
It is gratifying to see the traffic police bringing to book arrogant and ruthless auto drivers who have made our lives tough all these years. The farther you travel, the more is the torment they mete out to you. Hopefully, now Bangalore will be a better place to live in. Brijesh
The auto menace is particularly bad at Allalasandra, close to Yelahanka, where flyover work has made it difficult for buses to ply. Many auto drivers who live in the area, demand high fares, and charge even more when it rains or during the night. Police should do a similar drive here, which would help people a lot. Gopinath Sheshachar
Such initiatives are badly needed. Culprits must be punished by warnings the first or second time, and have their licences cancelled for a fresh offence.
Ramesh S Meleppanavar

Educate auto drivers on how to behave

Why does the RTO issue licences to these rogues? They seem to be hand-in-glove with the drivers. They should educate them to behave properly with women passengers. Their licences should be cancelled if they misbehave with women. Sanjay Parish
The onus of training drivers in etiquette and behaviour should be placed on the associations of which they are members. NGOs/ transport department should arrange for such classes at various localities on Sundays in nearby schools. Attendance of having undergone the training should be made mandatory for all the drivers within a stipulated period. Refresher classes should also be conducted on an annual basis. We should also conduct de-addiction camps for alcoholic drivers which is one major reason for arrogant behaviour. Narayan S Balaji

Congratulations BANGALOREMIRROR for highlighting the agony of commuters in the city through the report #TheAutoRaid. I have been in Bangalore for seven years now and faced many unpleasant experiences with auto drivers. Often meters are tampered in such a way that we don't realise it and are obliged to pay a huge amount. The other day when I got into an auto, realizing the driver was intoxicated, I tried to get down even before reaching my destination. I was shocked to see his reaction. He abused me in Kannada which I obviously didn't understand since I am from the north-east, but his anger frightened me. However, for the past two days, the drivers of autos that I have travelled in have politely switched on their meters and have become more commuter-friendly. Obviously, the steps takenby the traffic po- licemen have had an impact. Michelle Khiangte

Readers vent it out

Many auto drivers pack more than five passengers in an auto between Sirsi Circle and KR Market everyday. Why are the police not taking any action against them?

Traffic police should focus on G M Palya as fleecing is maximum here by auto drivers. This goes on till Basavanagar and Malleshpalya. Though we speak Kannada, it's of no help. Naveen
Whenever there is an argument between an auto driver and a passenger, the drivers of all the autos passing on that road at that time group together and start arguing (sometimes in a loud voice) in favour of the driver. This type of pressure makes the passenger uneasy, so that he/she gets out of the situation by shelling out whatever is demanded. Also, sometimes a passenger is asked to share the ride with unknown passengers (or the driver’s friends) in odd hours.

Chennai has shown dogged political will to tame the auto menace to a large extent, but not yet fully. That shows that the menace would not go away without relentless political will and police action. The police must impound autos for some time and also impose heavy fines before releasing them. Sundar Raman
The big problem is in the outskirts where autos charge a whopping Rs 100 to Rs 150 rupees for even a 2 to 3 kilometre trip. Jathin TK

The courteous auto driver In mid-May, I and my daughter-in-law had to supervise the house construction work in Sonnenahalli on the outskrits of the city. Generally drivers refuse to play there or charge one-and-a-half times the meter. But the auto driver we found to take us there from Vijayanagar not only waited for an hour to drop us back, but charged only the meter amount; we were impressed by his courteous manner. Hoping for a flawless auto experience

If this brings about even 5 per cent change in auto drivers, kudos to the police! (-.Karthik Shetty @fiddlesticks83'

Hats off for this great initiative! Hoping for a flawless auto experience! ,,,Estelle Huart @EstelleHrt

Good job Bangalore Traffic Police regarding #TheAutoRaid. Hope this is a step forward to tackle the menace of fleecing auto drivers. (,,,,,,,-T @tina_josef'

The auto guys really did deserve it. Hope travelling in auto would become a pleasant experience someday #THEAUTORAID #ThanksCops ,,-Tiji Varghese @tijivarghese

Aha… What a news to wake up. Proud of you! @Bangaloremirror (,,,,,-@WeAreBangalore'

Well done Bangalore police. Hope raids are conducted regularly. I would not have purchased a car if this was done earlier. Thanks #Theautoraid ,,,,-Abhay@mathurabhay

Oh... This is why they charged by meter

Oh, this is why the auto drivers just charged the ‘METER’ price today. None of them argued. We paid Rs 50 instead of the regular Rs 120. Preeti Rao

I would also like to request traffic police to carry out a similar raid on Tannery Road and Govindpur. I have been residing in this area for the past 10+ years and this entire strech is notorious for autowallahs who drive so rashly that they don’t mind knocking women riding two-wheelers. I have been knocked down more than twice. Tahera Salma M

Wow! Where was the autowallahs’ unity? They usually gang up on commuters. They could have texted or phoned across town to warn their brethren. Sudeep Sarkar

There are other scams which the police aren’t bothered about. Why are they targeting poor auto drivers who have to earn their daily bread? It seems the 700 undercover cops are jobless Nikhil Ag

Daily bread should be earned in a proper way, not by looting passengers.
