KM Farooque laid to rest at Tangail

Khandaker Mohammad Farooque, the freedom fighter and former student leader, has been laid to rest amid tributes from followers and colleagues.

He was buried with state honour in his village Aisrha at Tangail’s Basail Upazila on Wednesday.

Farooque passed away last Sunday in his hotel room at Bangkok where he went for treatment. His first Janaza was held in Dhanmondi after his remains were flown back home on Tuesday.

The second Namaz-e-Janaza for the former Bangladesh Chhatra Union president was held at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) at 10am.

The university’s teachers, students and staff gathered to pay tribute to the student leader who was thrice elected to lead the central students’ union (EUCSU).

The engineer-turned-businesman was managing director of Nor’-Wester Fashion, a buying house based in Mohakhali DOHS.

Leaders of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) paid tribute to Farooque at Shaheed Minar where his body was taken at 11am.

CPB President Mujahidul Islam Selim and advisor Monjurul Ahsan Khan placed flowers on his remains.

After fighting the Liberation War with ‘Kaderia Bahini’ at the age of 16, Farooque emerged as a key figure in the student’s struggle against HM Ershad’s autocratic rule.

He served as president of Bangladesh Chhatra Union from 1982 to 1984.

He later joined CPB and dedicated himself to Khetmojur Samiti.

Leaders and activists of the Workers Party, Socialist Party of Bangladesh, Mohila Parisad, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Juba Union, Khetmojur Samiti, Krishak Samiti, Khelaghar Ashar gathered to say farewell to the ‘admirable’ figure at Shaheed Minar.

Later, his body was taken to his village, where after a third Namaz-e-Janaza, a police team fired weapons to honour the freedom fighter.

Farooque, survived by wife and former student leader Sakina Banu Saki and two sons, was finally laid to rest at Aisrha High School ground.
