Look up Durban! BA's A380 is overhead

Durban – If you’re a Durban-based aerophile you might want to look up this week, as British Airways has been flying its big and beautiful Airbus A380 over the city for the past few days.

IOL reports that the airline is currently using King Shaka International Airport to train pilots to fly the world’s largest passenger aircraft.

The aircraft flies in to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport from Heathrow in London on a daily basis and once the passengers disembark, trainee pilots head on over to King Shaka for a few training flights before retracing their steps back to London.

In February this year, Cape Town also had an opportunity to witness the big bird when British Airways performed a fly-by over the Mother City for a photo opportunity.

The air-to- air photoshoot started with the A380 rendezvous-ing with the photographic aircraft over Robben Island, after which it flew inland past Table Mountain from Lion’s Head towards Devil’s Peak.

It was the first time that an A380 has flown over the World Heritage site.

The aircraft had also been based at King Shaka during this time, as Cape Town International did not have capacity to host an aircraft so large.

Aviation enthusiasts have been sharing their sightings of the A380 over Durban via social media. Check out these tweets:
