BHUBANESWAR: In a noble gesture, a non-resident Indian (NRO) schoolboy has been raising funds through his peers in the US for orphan kids in Odisha.
"We have found a club called Hope, which has 15 members from my Vista del Lago High School in Folsom, California. It has raised more than US$ 200 by setting up donation boxes at our school and by creating awareness among students," said Aman Mohapatra, a Class XII student, who is assisting Prashanti International School for orphans.
The help, so far, has gone to the Prashanti's school in Puri, he said.
Besides the financial aid, the club will also academically help the underprivileged by sending them study material online, said Mohapatra, who was in Bhubaneswar. The club plans to start tutoring in mathematics and English in August.
Mohapatra said he started the club after visiting the Prasanti school in Puri in the summer of 2012. "I wanted to help these kids. My peers liked my idea," he said.
The club plans to expand by introducing the project to other local high schools in California. The goal of this club this year is to have helped the kids academically for six days a week till the end of the school year, and raise over $1,000 for them, Mohapatra said.
