Tenders floated for parallel RTR flyover

The tenders floated on Tuesday will also include construction of an underpass at Benito Juarez Marg and a skywalk near Dhaula Kuan.

“If we had opted for a pre-fabricated concrete structure, it would have required setting up a plant close to the site, besides providing extra space for a launcher in the area. The construction of a composite structure comprising steel and cement also requires less time as fabrication and erection of a steel beam will take lesser time,” an official said.

While tenders for the project have been floated, the pre-bid meeting will be held on July 22. The final approval is likely to come through in September, officials said.

“We hope to start work after monsoons. The flyover will start from the left of where the Munirka flyover descends and will end near Niryat Bhawan. It will be constructed on portals for two-and-half km so that traffic can move on the ground level,’’ the official said.

The foundation and bearings of the flyover will be treated to prevent any vibrations. “There were some complaints of vibrations by people living in areas around the RTR flyover. To prevent this, we are going to treat the foundation and bearings to dampen this effect,’’ the official said.

The pillar will be erected first and there will be a 35-metre steel girder or beam (space between two pillars) to ensure minimum disturbance on the ground.

“The steel beams will be placed on the pillars. The deck will be made of concrete,’’ the official said, adding that view-cutters would also be put up on the new flyover.

The Rao Tula Ram Marg flyover, which serves as a key link to the airport and NH-8, has been the subject of considerable debate after a handful of Palam Marg residents, whose bungalows face the road, opposed the takeover of a service lane outside their houses for the flyover project. The flyover was reduced to a single carriageway, resulting in a traffic bottleneck and daily chaos.

“The width of the service lane might be reduced once construction begins,’’ the official said.

Constructing the parallel flyover will cost around Rs 211 crore. An underpass at Benito Juarez Marg and a skywalk near Dhaula Kuan will be built at a cost of  Rs 103 crore, the official said.
