Slain Kunda DSP’s elder sister commits suicide

The police were subsequently informed. No suicide note was recovered from the spot, Ojha said, adding Razia had allegedly doused herself with kerosene before immolating herself.

The elder sister of slain Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia-ul-Haq allegedly committed suicide by immolating herself at Chak Musayyad village under Ghosi police station area of Mau district, police said Tuesday. The incident took place Monday, they said.

Haq, then posted as Circle Officer (Kunda), was killed on March 2, 2013, in Pratapgarh, when he was surrounded by a mob while investigating a double-murder reported from Hathgawan police station area.

According to the police, Haq’s elder sister Razia Begum, in her late 30s, allegedly took the step around 1.30 pm Monday. “Some passersby noticed smoke coming out of the ground-floor room of her house and raised an alarm. Her in-laws, who were on the upper floor, also rushed downstairs and broke open the door to Razia’s room. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared brought dead,” said Ghosi Inspector (incharge) N K Ojha.

The police were subsequently informed. No suicide note was recovered from the spot, Ojha said, adding Razia had allegedly doused herself with kerosene before immolating herself. The body has been sent for post-mortem and a report was awaited.

“Her father Shamsul Haq and her uncle have arrived from her native place in Deoria district. They have not alleged any foul play so far. We will proceed as per the postmortem report,” said Circle Officer (Ghosi), Ashok Kumar Yadav. Preliminary investigations revealed that Razia’s husband Ismail — they got married in 1994 — had been living in Saudi Arabia for the past several years on account of work. He last came to India around five to six months ago. The couple had four sons, the eldest being nine years old.
