Digitally yours: Over 35L Raj era papers go online [DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India)]


(DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) "Jaipur: Rajasthan State Archives at Bikaner has become nation's first digitised archive where over 35 lakh estate period historical records are available online. 15 lakh more such documents will be digitised and made available on the archive's website within the next two months. The people can log on to www.rsad.rajasthan.gov.in to check the records.



The state archives department also aims to e-catalogue and preserve about 50 lakh estate period documents in the next couple of months.

In order to restore the documents in case of deletion of online image of documents, the department has also prepared a micro film.


Rajasthan State Archive's director Dr Mahendra Khadgawat claims that the state is the first one to digitise this much number of historical and administrative documents. "Rajasthan is the only state which has digitised the memoirs of 246 freedom fighters on the archive website," said Khadgawat. 246 audio cassettes and 303 CDs have been made of the memoirs of Gokul Bhai Bhatt, Siddhraj Dhadda, Ranchoddas Gattani, Mathuradas Mathur, Hiralal Shastri and others so that people can listen to the original accounts of the Independence movement.

As per the details a total of 30 lakh documents of the Bikaner estate, 2 lakh of Alwar estate and 7. 5 lakh documents of Jodhpur estate have been e-filed. In addition to these, a total of 2.25 lakh land and house related land pattas and other documents of Bikaner, Hanumangarh, Churu and Ganganagar districts have been digitised.

Documents which were e-catalogued include secretarial documents of Bikaner estate period, account books, Rampuriya records, Parwana account books, council orders etc. The 11 lakh documents of Jaipur estate period which were digitised include Syah Huzoor lawyers report, newspapers, applications, Tauji, Rukke, Parwane, Amber documents, Dastoor Kaumvaar, Mughal era historical orders, Farmaan, Signs and Mandoor, Wills Report, and documents related to Mughal Rajput and Rajput Maratha period.

Khadgawat also told dna that the department has also digitised 7.5 lakh revenue records of Jodhpur and 4 lakh of Bikaner district. Those who wish to get a copy of the land records can submit a fee of Rs10 in the department and get a printout of the same.

Similarly, the registry archives and records of the Matasya estate besides the Farmaan of the then Sirohi royal period as well as records of royals of Mount Abu estate have also been digitised.

In addition to these, documents related to Independence movement, Prajamandal Revolution, newspaper cuttings, documents of Mughal kings like Jahangir, Shahjahan, Aurangzeb, Noorjahan, Bahadur Shah Zafar besides letters written by Jaipur, Jodhpur and Sirohi royals were also digitised.

"With the online availability of records of erstwhile royals, people can search their land and house related documents and can also take a copy of it," said Khadgawat.

The archive department director also told dna that under the pact between the Mehrangarh Trust and state government, over 50 lakh estate period documents will also be made available online. These include administrative documents of the estate period, census data and caste-based census of 1891 as well as famine reports.
