Indian retailer Snapdeal has just announced its own branded Android smartphone developed under the “Launchpad” program, Alpha Feather.

As the name suggests, Alpha Feather is supposed to be the world’s lightest 5-inch smartphone at only 125g, battery included. The smartphone is now available for purchase at Snapdeal for Rs 12,999 ($215 / €160) outright.

Specs-wise, it looks like Snapdeal has mixed some mid-range and high-end features, so customers won’t feel that the smartphone is too expensive for what it has to offer.

For example, the device is equipped with a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, which is fit for mid-range handsets, but it also packs 2GB of RAM that’s usually included in high-end phones.

Then again, the Alpha Feather comes with only 4GB of internal memory, though users will be able to further expand storage up to 32GB via microSD card slot.

One of the mandatory features required in India, dual-SIM capability, could not be overlooked, so expect this feature to be included as well.

Another strong point of the handset would be the fact that the Alpha Feather ships with Android 4.4 KitKat operating system out of the box, so there’s no need to wait for this update.

To make things even more appealing to Android enthusiasts and fans, Snapdeal has also included a vibrant 5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports full HD (1080p) resolution.

“Innovation and technology is the DNA of Snapdeal.com. The other existing sellers on the website are selling existing brands. We launched this platform to support creativity and innovation amongst new age entrepreneurs,” said Snapdeal Senior Vice President (Electronics & Home) Tony Navin.

But the good things do not stop here, as the Alpha Feather boasts an amazing 13-megapixel photo snapper on the back, which features autofocus, LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording, as well as a no less impressive 8-megapixel camera in the front that’s perfect for selfies and video calls.

According to Snapdeal, Alpha Feather is powered by a 2500 mAh battery, which should provide users with up to 136 hours of standby time or up to 4 hours of talk time. This right here seems to be one of the phone’s downsides, the battery life being so low on both standby and talk times.

“The team at Snapdeal has supported us seamlessly, they have helped us from the initial stages, reaching out to the consumers, marketing our product and distribution and logistics services. Also the partnership makes it easy for us to solely focus on innovation,” Alpha Tech Co-Founder Kunjan Chauhan said.
