ALLAHABAD: Members of social organizations would build a 'Shahid Wall' to pay tributes to Maulvi Liyakat Ali and others, who led the freedom fighters of the city during the First War of Independence in 1857. It had been planned to inaugurate the wall on August 15.
A decision in this regard was taken in a meeting convened by RP Mishra, former vice chancellor of Allahabad University, with the members of social organizations on Monday.
They had chosen a venue in Civil Lines to construct the wall to apprise the young generation about the sacrifices of the freedom fighters.
In 1857, a group of freedom fighters, led by Maulvi Liyakar Ali and Ramchandra, freed the city from the clutches of the East India Company soldiers.
"Several people were hanged to death with trees in the city," Mishra said.
"The martyrs' contributions for the freedom of the country will be highlighted on the wall," he added.
