In an incident with inter-state connotations, an under-construction liquor vend close to Chandigarh border was demolished by the people of Nayagaon village in neighbouring Punjab on Monday morning.

Kamaljeet Singh, SHO of Nayagaon, said the villagers, who included women, did not want a liquor vend close to their houses.
However, vend owner Kamal Bajaj blamed the incident on those whose business of illegal liquor distribution would be affected by his vend.

Bajaj, who also owns vends in Sector 7, 8 and 35, said, “I am not able to understand what is the problem with the residents. They trespassed, vandalised the vend and also threatened my staff.” He said, earlier, the people of Khuda Ali Sher, which is in Chandigarh, had opposed the opening of the vend in their village.

“They vandalised my vend, cars parked outside and also threatened my staff. They asked me to move the vend and I moved it 2 km away,” he said. Dr Hukam Chand, sarpanch of Khuda Ali Sher, said, “After the vend was shifted, we had no problem. However, the people of Nayagaon created
a ruckus on Monday.”

A villager of Nayagaon said, “Why should a vend be opened near our houses? It is a matter for concern.”

Festive offer

Bajaj said the villagers of Nayagaon should have approached the authorities instead of taking the law in their hands. Police and law enforcement agencies are supposed to keep a check on such incidents.
