Mumias Sugar Company fires its legal manager

Mumias Sugar Company Legal Officer Emily Otieno has been sacked.

Speaking to The Standard, board Chairman Dan Ameyo said Ms Otieno was fired on Friday on allegations she was part of a team that mismanaged the company's affairs.

"She was part of the management that acted contrary to the board's directives and without its approval. As the company's legal officer, she has been involved in shady deals that cost the company a loss of Sh1.1 billion," Mr Ameyo said adding: "The board has so far fired eight senior managers. We are still studying the findings of the audit report and more heads will roll until we restore sanity in the company and serve farmers better."

In March, the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture made an impromptu visit to a depot belonging to the sugar company in Mombasa and found over seven tonnes of imported sugar. It recommended the sacking of the entire management over the more than 10,000 bags at the warehouse.
