Brentwood, CA (PRWEB) June 30, 2014 -- A recent Columbia University study endeavored to find a way to classify periodontal or gum disease based on the gene expression of the affected gum tissue. With over half of America suffering from some form of periodontal or gum disease, the need for better diagnostic and treatment options is great. The CENTER for Advanced Periodontal & Implant Therapy’s Dr. Alexandre-Amir Aalam and Dr. Alina Krivitsky, both board-certified periodontists and professors at USC, commented that the Columbia team’s research could someday help develop a simple gum disease test for dental offices.
“Periodontitis is a serious disease,” commented Dr. Aalam. “Many patients ignore the early signs of gum disease, such as bleeding gums and mouth discomfort, and wait to visit a periodontist until they experience tooth loss and tooth decay. By this point, our treatment options are more limited. Patients often require dental implants to restore their smiles.”
According to Dr. Aalam and Dr. Krivitsky, whether patients suffer from chronic gum disease, which progresses slowly, or aggressive gum disease, which spreads more rapidly, early treatment is key to saving as much gum tissue, teeth, and bone as possible.
“If we catch gum disease early, we can treat it with root scaling and planing, a very simple and quick procedure,” said Dr. Krivitsky. “If we catch it too late, restoring oral health is a much more arduous process.”
At the CENTER for Periodontal and Implant Therapy, Dr. Aalam and Dr. Krivitsky offer a variety of cosmetic and restorative periodontal procedures, including gum depigmentation for dark gums, gum grafts, crown lengthening, wisdom tooth extraction, and dental implants. Brentwood patients with gum disease may also require pocket reduction surgery if they suffer from gum disease.
“There’s no need to be afraid of the dentist or periodontist,” said Dr. Aalam. “We offer sedation therapy to keep our patients comfortable. If your gums are bleeding or receding, you should schedule an appointment immediately. The sooner the better.”
Dr. Alexandre-Amir Aalam and Dr. Alina Krivitsky are board certified periodontists specializing in dental implants and gum and tissue diseases. They opened the CENTER, a periodontal office focused on providing patients with excellent and skilled care at affordable prices, with the goal of restoring oral health and aesthetic appearance. They are alumni of the prestigious Ostrow School of Dentistry at USC and are still heavily involved in academia and giving back to future periodontists at USC. They are also the only two board-certified periodontists in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles.
