Pampa Bharatha: An exploration of an epic
Pampa Bharatha attempts to explore the epic Vikramaarjuna Vijaya. The play -- which will be staged on July 2 at Ranga Shankara -- begins with two university scholars visiting Pampa’s hometown of Dharmapuri in search of any evidence of Pampa’s works during his old age.
The real drama begins when the students encounter the characters of the past who have witnessed the events themselves. The play progresses towards Pampa rising from the stone inscription erected in his memory by his friend and Samantha king Arikesari.
Pampa is encountered by his favorite character of the Mahabharata, Karna.
The play, which has been directed by Pramod Shiggaon, revolves round the journey of Karna and Pampa through the story of Mahabharata to answer Karna’s questions about the injustice done to him in Pampa’s re-written Mahabharata. In the course of this journey, the play reveals the hard realities of caste-based politics in society from then till now.
