A voluntary effort to promote environmental awareness

June 30, 2014 01:03 pm | Updated 01:03 pm IST - TIRUCHI:

Thaneer, a voluntary organisation to promote environment awareness and conservation in the city, was formally inaugurated in the city on Saturday.

Apart from sensitising people to environmental conservation, the organisation will hold seminars once every three months in the city inviting experts in the field and promote environment clubs in colleges.

The organisation was inaugurated by K.Kalidasan, president, OSAI, a voluntary organisation, in the presence of M.Sekaran, president, and other office bearers of Thaneer.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Kalidasan observed that environmental conservation required collective action but unfortunately only a few were involved in such activities now. Environmentalism is all about retrieving the traditional lifestyle practices. Environmentalists, he said, were not against development but only emphasised the need for sustainable development.

Pon.Ilango, vice president, Thaneer, traced the organisations roots to the voluntary public movement to retrieve the Mavakudikulam and subsequently the Uyyakondan in the city. The organisation would coordinate field work such as revival of water bodies and afforestation and campaigns against the use of non bio degradable plastics. It would also organise eco tours for students to sensitise them, he said.
