The Maharashtra Rajya Shikshak Parishad (MRSP) has planned a day-long protest at the office of the Thane Municipal Corporation on July 7, to demand payment of Rs1.16 crore due to teachers who were engaged in census work in 2011.

More than 1,000 teachers in Mumbra, in Thane district, were involved as enumerators and 168 as supervisors in the census. Enumerators were promised a remuneration of Rs18,000, while supervisors were to be paid Rs24,000.

They received half of the payment in May last year and have not yet received the remainder amount.

"A total 1,176 teachers from aided and unaided school in the Mumbra area have not received the full payment for the work they did in the 2011 census. On Friday. when we met Aseem Gupta, Thane municipal commissioner, about the matter, he told us that they had not received the amount from the rural development department and the corporation was following up the matter," said Ramnath Mote, member of the legislative council, who has extended his support to the teachers.

Anil Bornare, president, MRSP, said the teachers had worked for about three months on the census, even missing out on vacations. "If they do not fulfill the order of the government they are threatened with strict action. So why doesn't the government pay those who have done their job sincerely," he asked.
