MUMBAI: The
crime branch, which is conducting a parallel probe into the murder of a
96-year-old man from Nagpada, has “got some leads” from the call data records of the victim’s two SIM cards, said senior police officers. The Nagpada police, which is also probing the case, suspect an insider’s hand.
On June 28 morning,
Abdul Hameed Ansari’s grandson, Wahid, found him dead with his hands and legs tied in his first-floor house at
Yakub Manzil.
Ansari’s
five mobile phones were missing, but the robbers did not manage to break open a drawer that contained Rs 6.45 lakh.
The crime branch has reportedly rounded up six robbers from the area on suspicion, but police refused to confirm this.
“The man lived alone in the 150sqft room and never opened the door for strangers. In fact, after sunset, he even would not entertain his own sons,” said
Vinayak Deshmukh, DCP (zone 3).
“Also, the area is crowded with several manufacturing units nearby, which work 24x7. Hence, there is a strong possibility that the murderer was known to the victim,” said an officer, adding that there are no
CCTV cameras in the area. The post-mortem report suggests the crime took place between 5am and 8am, and he was
smothered.
