The 154-year-old Mrs. A.V.N. College, which had produced several luminaries in different walks of life such as Sir C.V. Raman, Tenneti Viswanadham, Dwaram Venkata Swamy Naidu, Alluri Seetharama Raju, to name a few, has also been rendering yeomen services towards educating the poor.
Students of Mrs. AVN College Polytechnic, most of them hailing from poor families, have brought laurels to the college by scoring above 70 per cent in the first year examination.
The polytechnic college was launched two years ago and the first batch did not perform up to the mark.
“The second batch students were admitted after proper screening and the results speak for themselves,” said Principal R.V. Ramana Rao.
Out of 250 students who appeared for the examination, four secured above 90 per cent, 11 above 80 per cent, and 30 above 70 per cent marks.
A majority of the students hail from poor families like children of security guards, mechanics.
“Mother of one of our students died before the examination and the boy planned to discontinue his studies due to poverty and problems in the family. I dissuaded him from doing so and arranged free books, free coaching, and other benefits with the cooperation of the college management. He passed the examination,” recalled Mr. Ramana Rao, who retired as Regional Joint Director of Technical Education.
The toppers in first year polytechnic are:
EEE: K. Prem Kumar (90.6 per cent) and Sabina (89.9 per cent); Civil: V. Dhanalakshmi (89.1 per cent) and D. Siva Krishna (87.5 per cent); ECE: Eluru Tejaswini (91.6 per cent) and T. Shadmani ((86 per cent); CME: K. Srikanth (72 per cent) and A. Chandrika (71 per cent) and Mechanical: Bade Hanok (91.3 per cent) and P. Appala Reddy (90.6 per cent).
