Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday cautioned party’s first-time MPs against considering their election as an end in itself and stressed the importance of bearing the responsibilities of a ruling party MP.

Inaugurating a two-day workshop in Surajkund near Delhi for over 150 newly elected Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs of the BJP, Modi told them: “Our transition from Opposition to treasury benches is not limited to moving of a few seats to the other side. This is a significant transition and we must try to appreciate the meaning of this.”

A party source present at the event said Modi stressed on being careful about their “aachaar, vichaar aur vyavhaar (conduct, thoughts and behaviour)” and underlined that while being in the  Opposition meant more aggression, their role becomes more responsible on treasury benches.

Former party president and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu, who is spearheading the workshop, said the Prime Minister told the new MPs about how to “maintain standards in public life, how to take the message of good governance to the people and the message of the BJP, in turn that of Modi, to people”.

“To be a Member of Parliament is an important thing and one must look at it seriously. Remember, people are observing your performance in the House and outside,” Modi told the new MPs.

Festive offer

A press statement issued by the BJP said: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the first-time party MPs to develop a sense of mission towards their duties and select at least one subject for self-study to have deeper understanding in it.”

“Training for elected reps is critical for success of democracy! Select at least one subject for self-study! Earn expertise!,” party leader Vinay Sahasrabuddhe quoted Modi on his Twitter posts.

Modi is said to have underlined the importance of “brevity and focus in parliamentary speeches” and of “not getting disillusioned by small issues”. He told the MPs to “eschew every kind of negativism”.

The Prime Minister is also learnt to have impressed upon the need to maintain a constant dialogue with party organisation. “Do not consider that this (getting elected) is an end. There is no end to opportunities to do something. There should be a constant ideological dialogue with the party,” an MP present at the workshop quoted Prime Minister as saying.

Speaking on the occasion, BJP president Rajnath Singh too reminded the first-time MPs “of their responsibility towards their constituencies” and urged them to ensure an orderly and disciplined conduct in the House.
