Fear factor

Lack of illumination on Pallavaram Station Road irks commuters, reports T.S. Atul Swaminathan

S. Albert Mathew, a resident of Eashwari Nagar, Zameen Pallavaram, never fails to carry a torchlight in his office bag when he goes to work, because he returns home late, around 11 p.m., when the Pallavaram Station Road is poorly illuminated due to a lack of street lamps. “There are no street lamps on Pallavaram Station Road for a distance of one kilometre. It is unsafe for walkers after sunset,” he says.

Hundreds of commuters and pedestrians use the thoroughfare daily to go to Eashwari Nagar.

“Despite several representations to Pallavapuram Municipality, no action has been taken. . Motorists also find it very difficult to travel on the stretch after dusk,” S. Alex Reagan, said.

Lack of proper lighting has aroused among residents a fear of anti social elements, who could take advantage of the dark to carry out self-seeking criminal acts. “It is not safe for us to venture out when it is dark. Many residents have stopped going out in the evenings,” residents said.

S. Sankari, a commuter, and a resident of Zameen Pallavaram, says it is not safe for pedestrians, especially women, to use the thoroughfare after dusk.

Official sources in the Pallavapuram Municipality said street lamp posts would be installed soon.
