Watch Puss N Boots Cover Johnny Cash’s ‘Bull Rider’ – Premiere
Rodney Crowell originally wrote “Bull Rider,” a track about the sort of reckless character named in the title, for Johnny Cash‘s 1979 album Silver. Last year, however, he resurrected it for Old Yellow Moon, a collection of duets between him and Emmylou Harris. Here, watch Puss N Boots – all three of them: Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper – give the song their own twist in a performance recorded at Brooklyn’s Bell House.

“To us, ‘Bull Rider’ is about taking risks and living life the way you see fit in the meadows of your own mind. Do what you gotta do – even if it’s dangerous like riding a bull,” Dobson tells Rolling Stone, quickly clarifying: “Not to say it means being careless, but in relation to us girls – even if we ‘made it,’ it’s because we took the path of the artist and the outlaw. We are destined to a life that lends itself to constant change and flowing, more so with each rise and fall.”
A line from “Bull Rider” also inspired the title of the group’s debut, No Fools, No Fun. Out July 15th (and available for pre-order now), the record features covers of Neil Young’s “Down by the River” and Wilco’s “Jesus, Etc.” alongside a handful of originals written by all three members. Live, Puss N Boots will be playing a handful of shows across the Northeast, leading up to an appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in late July.
