Brave guard foils bid to rob ATM cash van

The van had stopped to transfer cash to a kiosk on Tuesday morning when four accused attacked the guard and fled when he fired in the air.

The brave security guard of a cash van that transfers money to ATMs is recovering at a Thane hospital, after he was attacked while foiling an attempt to rob the van early Tuesday morning in Thane.

Security guard Sudhakar Mahapdi, 52, who took on four unknown accused, suffered head injuries when they struck at him with a chopper. He managed to pull out his gun and fire a round in the air, scaring off the would-be robbers. Mahapdi was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital, and is said to be out of danger.

According to the Naupada police, the cash transfer van arrived at the HSBC ATM kiosk near Ram Maruti Road in Thane around 8.15 am.

When the employees left the van and went into the kiosk to transfer cash, the accused who were sitting in a car parked nearby approached the van. They were, however, challenged by Mahapdi.

“As soon as they saw the workers going inside, the culprits got out of their car, came to the van, and when the guard stopped them they began beating him up. When they produced a chopper and struck at him, he pulled out his gun,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Thane City) Ashok Dudhe. “Investigations are on,” he added.

By then the other employees had come out of the kiosk, and the accused fled from the scene. Mahapdi was admitted to Kaushaliya Hospital at Ganeshwadi in Thane, and is said to be out of danger and recovering.

Meanwhile, the Naupada police have registered a case under Section 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 398 (attempt to commit robbery or dacoity armed with deadly weapon). They have recorded the statements of the other employees and have launched a manhunt for the accused.
