Legislative council: Lobbying delays list to governor
BANGALORE: Hectic lobbying by camps of Congress members Ivan D'Souza and Shantha Kumar, both contenders for the legislative council seat under the nominations category, is reportedly delaying sending the list to governor HR Bhardwaj for approval.
The list finalized by CM has three members from the minorities — two Muslims and one Christian — with the other two represented by backward classes.
According to sources, D'Souza, a Catholic Christian from Mangalore is expected to replace Kumar, a Protestant, in the final list, with some religious leaders backing him.
It's expected to be sent to Raj Bhavan by Tuesday ahead of the governor demitting office this week.
It's learnt that after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi suggested that contender Nivedith Alva, son of Rajasthan governor Margaret Alva, can wait, former minister Oscar Fernandes lobbied for Kumar. The latter is INTUC member based in Bangalore.
Sources said D'Souza, who was in the JD(S) a couple of years ago, has Siddaramaiah's support. Among the minorities in the list, there is opposition to Davanagere district Congress president Abdul Jabbar. In the event of the CM dropping Jabbar, the seat may go to a Lingayat.
