The Suvarna Foundation, which is known for presenting plays such as ‘Court Martial’ has come out with a Tulu play ‘Kalankdi Neer.’ It will be showcased at the Town Hall on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Directed by well-known theatre and film personality Sadanand Suvarna, the play is being presented by the Foundation in association with the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy.
Translated into Tulu by Mr. Suvarna himself from well-known Kannada play ‘Kadadida Neeru’ written by G.B. Joshi (known by his penname Jadabharata), had been staged in its original form by Mr. Survana in Mumbai about 40 years ago.
With the new “realistic” production, Mr. Suvarna hopes to introduce serious theatre to Tulu audience, who are regularly treated to plays full of comedy scenes.
Social conflictTaking time off from dress rehearsal at the Town Hall, Mr. Suvarna said the 70-year-old play was still relevant as it highlighted the conflict between the social situation of the villages and the politics – played out even today.
It highlights the travails of a Gandhian who returns to a village after a long association with the Mahatma only to be confronted by a local leader, who is ruling the village. It highlights how Gandhians are getting relegated to the corners of society.
A series of three Kannada plays by Mr. Suvarna on court themes was a big hit a couple of years ago. He has won National Best Film Award in 1977 for his production ‘Ghatashraddha.’ His 13-episode TV serial Guddada Bhoota has earned him plaudits.
