Dibrugarh teenagers attempt suicide after Facebook fiasco
DIBRUGARH: Two teenage girls from the Duliajan area in Dibrugarh district on Thursday evening attempted to commit suicide after being reprimanded by elders for uploading objectionable posts about local girls through a fake Facebook account.
According to locals, the two girls, studying in Class X, created a fake account on Facebook a few days ago and allegedly uploaded photographs of different girls from the Duliajan area with their phone numbers.
As a result, the girls started getting obscene calls from different people at odd hours.
Baffled by the phone calls, some of the harassed girls informed their parents, who, in turn, registered a police complaint. During investigation, police zeroed in on the two teenagers.
A public meeting was called by locals and the two girls were questioned. On confessing, they were reprimanded and made to apologize. The two teens were then allowed to return home.
After reaching home, one of the girls reportedly took a safety blade and inflicted injuries on her neck and hand. The other girl, too, tried to consume phenyl at her residence. Both girls were taken to the Oil India Limited hospital. According to doctors, the conditions of both are stable now.
Officer in-charge of Duliajan PS Sanjib Baruah said, "Considering the young age of the two girls, the victims' guardians didn't file a case against them. The two have promised to desist from such pranks in the future. One of the girls suffered superficial injuries after she tried to cut herself. The condition of the other girl is also stable."
