Heer's a chance for new kid to clear up

Our tipster casts his eye over the pick of the weekend's meets

The final day of Royal Ascot and I am hoping to see a new kid on the sprinting block land the feature Diamond Jubilee Stakes, Aljamaaheer.

Roger Varian’s five-year-old was a more than useful seven furlong/miler last year with his best performance coming with a cracking second behind Declaration of War in the Queen Anne Stakes at this meeting.

However, since then Varian has trained him with a sprinting career in mind and his opening salvo in the Abernant Stakes at Newmarket was a cracker, closing in late on to run Hamza and company to half a length.

Kept fresh by his shrewd young handler since then, the selection should relish the prevailing fast ground and most important of all for me has top-class form at this specialists’ track.

There are several dangers worth a second look — none more so than the uncomplicated Irish raider Slade Power. The way he readily dismissed Maarek in the Greenlands Stakes in Ireland was superb and he is preferred to the likes of the three-year-old Astaire and French raider American Devil.

About three minutes later a field of 30 handicappers will fly down the same course and distance in a very different kind of race, the Wokingham, and I expect a huge run from Sir Maximilian.

Tim Pitt’s charge has long looked as though this cavalry charge would suit his style of racing and a thoroughly professional performance in beating Caspian Prince over five furlongs at Chester points to his claims here.

I actually think a step up to a sixth furlong will bring about some improvement in his game and the bonus is he looks well drawn on the stands’ side rail in stall 28.

As you would expect in such a big field there are numerous dangers including Lancelot Du Lac, Ninjago and Absolutely So. The latter hacked up at Goodwood last time out and could still be feasibly handicapped.

Of the remainder of the card, Mubaraza, fourth in the Ascot Stakes last year, can end the meeting on a high for us by land the Queen Alexandra Stakes (5.45) from last year’s Ebor hero Tiger Cliff, while Hamelin could still be well handicapped off a rating of 96 in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at 3.05.

Away from the Berkshire track, I shall trust my hard-earned on the old boy Piscean in the 5.15 at Newmarket, while Norse Blues looks the one to be on in the 2.55 at Ayr — especially if the ground remains on the fast side of good at the western Scotland track.

Finally, have a second look at the unexposed Atalanta Bay in the Lingfield 8.35. This represents a rise in the class for the filly, but she obviously has an affinity with this track and could in time rate a fair bit higher than her current mark.
