LUDHIANA: Members of Lodhi club have been trying hard to reduce contesting terms from five years to three years. They have decided to raise the subject of temporary suspension of membership. Besides, the amount being spent on cultural events in the club will also be discussed at the annual general meeting to be held on June 23.
Partially in support of candidates who are never able to get the seat and partly because everyone deserves a chance, club members have written to the office, asking them to put in a proposal and reduce the number of times a person can contest elections.
According to the existing rules, any club member can contest and hold office for as many as five tenures. But this year, certain members expressed their disapproval and asked the president to trim this down to three years.
The president had asked club members to send a list of queries they wished to bring up in the house during the annual meeting. With the meeting due on the 23rd of this month, the office has received several copies of members concerned, some talking about over-charging by caterers, others objecting to the rising number of guest entries at events.
The club allows temporary suspension of membership to people going abroad on payment of Rs 10,000. "Under this procedure, any member who is going overseas for a fixed amount of time can pay the club this amount and will not have to pay subscription until he comes back. However, we have received another letter yesterday asking to have this done for people travelling to other cities too", said Manoj Gupta, club general secretary.
The dummy run for the AGM will be held on the club premises on Friday evening. Other issues to be discussed include transfer of corporate membership to the general category, sale of membership, use of club facilities by non-members, among others. Serious questions have been raised on the money being spent on cultural events, which amounted to Rs 78 lakh last year.
