Divya S Menon has sung in films like Immanuel, Salala Mobiles and also one of the songs in Thattathin Marayathu, but it was one song which made her a star overnight ' Mangalyam in Bangalore Days. The TV anchor/singer speaks about her lucky break, how it is like to be a new singer in the industry and more.
How it all started I was anchoring a music show for
Kairali Channel when
Shaan Rahman noticed me and invited me to sing one of the songs for the album
Coffee@MG Road.
I went on to sing in the choir for a song in
Malarvady Art's Club as well. Gopi Sunder had told me at that point itself that I had a good voice and that he would call me whenever there was an opportunity.
Bangalore Days ' Mangalyam Gopi Sunder called me saying there is a song in
Bangalore Days ' Mangalyam. 'Give it a try. Let's see if they like it' is all he said. He explained the mood of the song and I recorded the track. Before long, Gopi Sunder called to say that I was through! I was excited but had no idea that song would be used as the promo song or that it would be so popular. I am thankful to Gopi Sunder for having the confidence in me.
Competition is tougher Earlier, you had to somehow bring your work to the attention of a music director. Now they listen to you through TV reality shows and social media. But at the same time, there is a lot of competition as well. I would say luck plays a major factor in a singer's career.
What next? I have trained in Carnatic and Hindustani music on and off and would like to continue that, while taking up playback offers. Like most singers, I love melody, but I wish to sing in every genre, with different music directors. I call this a learning phase, where I learn something from each project I take up. I still do TV shows, and have a few releases coming up '
Nikah, Dooram and a Telugu project. I'm married and my husband has only encouraged me to pursue my passion.
