Traffic constable’s death: Police yet to form special team to probe case

Police said Ramankant reportedly drove for 150 metres, before the constable was thrown off the bonnet and came under the wheels.

On Tuesday, police announced a special team comprising three inspectors to investigate the death of traffic constable Mana Ram (25), who was crushed to death on Saturday evening by a car he was trying to stop on Zakhira flyover in Moti Nagar, West Delhi. But till Wednesday evening, no Crime Branch inspector had been asked by the Police Headquarters to investigate the case. The case is still being investigated by local police, sources said.

The accused driver, Ramankant (26), has told police that the brakes of his car failed and that he accidentally pressed the accelerator, crushing Ram.

Police are now banking on the statement of Constable Naresh, who is the sole eyewitness in the case. Naresh was with Ram near the flyover when the accident took place. Based on Naresh’s statement, police had registered a case of murder.

The incident was reported on Saturday evening near Zakhira flyover, where Ram was on duty. According to police, Ramankant ran over Ram after the constable stopped him ahead of the flyover.

Police said Ramankant reportedly drove for 150 metres, before the constable was thrown off the bonnet and came under the wheels.

“Ram stopped Ramankant, who was driving a white Ritz, and told him to take the road on the left. When Ramankant refused to follow the order, the two got into an argument. Eventually Ramankant, who remained adamant about taking the flyover, tried to drive away,” a senior police officer said.

Police said Ram stood in front of the car to block it. “Instead of slowing down, Ramankant reversed and accelerated towards Ram,” a police officer said.

According to police, Ram then jumped on to the car’s bonnet, thinking the driver would stop. But Ramankant kept driving. He accelerated while Ram held on to the wipers of the car.

“To push Ram off the bonnet, Ramankant started to drive zig-zag, but Ram kept his balance. After dragging him in that way for over 150 metres, Ramankant brought the car to a sudden halt and Ram fell off. Ramankant then reversed the car and ran over Ram, crushing him under the car’s rear wheels before driving off,” a police officer said.
