Have You Heard of the Internet Acroynms the FBI Thinks You Use?

The FBI’s 83-page list of Internet acronyms was made publicly available this week.

“The [Directorate of Intelligence’s] Intelligence Research Support Unit has put together an extensive—but far from exhaustive—list of shorthand and acronyms used in Twitter and other social media venues such as instant messages, Facebook and MySpace,” the list — called “Twitter Shorthand” — reads.

It’s exhaustive indeed. But according to Google Trends data for a few acronyms pulled from the list, it’s also outdated. Most peaked in popularity years ago: SWMBO (she who must be obeyed), BOGOF (buy one get one free), 2MORO (tomorrow) and DNFTT (do not feed the troll) all peaked before around or before 2010. IITYWTMWYBMAD (if I tell you what this means, will you buy me a drink?), meanwhile, has flatlined.

And some, like IITYWTMWYBMAD, have been and continue to be obscure:

BTDTGTTSAWIO (“been there, done that, got the t-shirt and wore it out”)

EOTWAWKI (“end of the world as we know it”)

SOIDH (“screenshot or it didn’t happen”)

IAWTCSM (“I agree with this comment so much”)

YKWRGMG (“you know what really grinds my gears?”)

PMYMHMMFSWGAD (“pardon me, you must have mistaken me for someone who gives a damn”)
