Malaysian Foreign Minister On Four-Nation Carribbean Visit To Lobby Support For UN Security Council Seat

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Anifah Aman is on a four-nation official visit to the Carribbean to lobby support for Malaysia's candidature to a non-permanent seat in the United Nations (UN) Security Council for the 2015-2016 term. Foreign Ministry in a statement, here Tuesday stated that his visit starting today until June 25 to the Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Saint Lucia and Bahamas of the Caribbean would be accompanied by the Malaysian Ambassador to Venezuela and the Malaysian Ambassador to Cuba. During his visit, Anifah is scheduled to call on the prime ministers and meet with his counterparts from the four Carribean island countries. The meetings would provide excellent opportunities to discuss issues of mutual interest, including regional and international issues and areas of cooperation to further strengthen the relationship between Malaysia and the four countries, the statement said. Anifah was also expected to meet with Malaysian community in Trinidad and Tobago, as part of the government's effort to engage with Malaysians living abroad. Malaysia has served on the UN Security Council three times, which were during 1965, 1989 to 1990 and 1999 to 2000. Malaysia's candidature for the 2015-2016 has received endorsement of the member states of Asean, the Asia-Pacific Group and the Gulf Cooperation Council. --BERNAMA
