The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has sent showcause notices to 42 industrial units in Tarapur MIDC area for flouting pollution norms. The units have been given a week to reply to the notices, which threaten to forfeit bank guarantees amounting to Rs 1.6 crore.
According to the MPCB, the units were found to be discharging excess effluents directly into the Navapur creek without treating them in the central effluent treatment plant (CETP). Moreover, the units were found using water in excess of the sanctioned quantity and the hazardous waste was also not being sent to the Taloja solid waste management plant.
“It is observed that the you have not complied with the conditional directions within the stipulated period and are therefore called upon to show as to why the bank guarantee imposed against each condition should not be forfeited,” read the letter.
Last year, after a visit to the industrial units in the Tarapur MIDC, the MPCB had issued directions to around 58 units to stop manufacturing activities for flouting norms till remedial measures are taken for effluent treatment.
In April, the Board officials visited the units to check for compliance and found that 42 of these units continued to flout the norms.
“Despite several chances to comply with the norms, these units continue to cause pollution. We will take the appropriate action after their response to these notices within a week. If they fail to reply, we will encash the bank guarantees,” said P K Mirashe, assistant secretary (technical), MPCB.
