Two women held for abducting newborn
HYDERABAD: Charminar police arrested two women late on Saturday night who had abducted a new-born baby girl from the Government Maternity Hospital and rescued the baby. A good Samaritan, who passed on the information about the abduction and helped police nab the culprits, was given a cash prize.
The arrested are Lavanya and Vijaya, both oil mill workers from Tukkuguda.
Vijaya’s husband had deserted her a few months ago for not bearing children. Vijaya thought she would steal a baby from the maternity hospital to save her marital life and sought her friend Lavanya’s help.
On Saturday evening, Lavanya along with Vijaya went to the maternity hospital in Old City and stole the new-born baby girl of a housewife, Sangeeta from Uppuguda, when she was asleep. After the girl went missing, the family members and the hospital authorities alerted the police.
As they were searching for the missing infant, one Vittal from Falaknuma called up police saying that he noticed two women carrying a new-born girl near Khilwat. Police immediately reached the spot and picked up the two women as they could not give satisfactory answers about the girl they were carrying.
“When the incident happened, Vittal was at the maternity hospital to meet a relative, who had delivered a baby. On his way back home, Vittal noticed the two women moving in a suspicious manner with the baby in their hands and asked them about their whereabouts. As the women could not give proper answers, Vittal immediately alerted us. We have given a cash reward to Vittal for helping in tracing the girl,” Charminar inspector A Yadgiri said.
The baby was handed over to her parents and the two women were remanded to judicial custody under kidnapping charges as per section 363 (Kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
